Cathy could teach a class for brides-to-be called “How Not to Be a Bridezilla… No Matter What”.
We’ve all heard of Bridezillas. What makes a Bridezilla? And how can you keep from becoming one? Having a backstage pass to weddings every weekend, I’ve got a few theories. In my experience, all Bridezillas have two qualities in common: They’ve become so focused on perfection that they’ve lost track of what their wedding day is all about, and they can’t relinquish control for fear that something will go wrong.
The happiest, least monstrous brides have the exact opposite two qualities. They know that no matter whether everything goes exactly according to plan or not, at the end of the day, they will be married to the one they love most. They find capable vendors and friends whom they trust to carry out the day as planned. When planning your own wedding, this is the best advice I can offer you: Choose vendors with plenty of experience, and trust their judgment. Plan every minute detail with them before the wedding, if you want. Or choose a planner to do that for you. Either way, when the big day arrives, sit back and enjoy the ride. And smile!
Cathy and Josh had this smiling thing down pat. In looking through their images to choose some teasers, I found them smiling or laughing in nearly. every. picture. For nine hours straight. I wonder if their cheek muscles were sore the next day. And it’s not that the day held some rare perfection — it had all the usual hurdles and speed bumps like any other wedding day. But Cathy and Josh saw the joy in the day, and it was reflected on their faces. Nervousness before the reveal = smiles. Huddling for warmth in the cold wind during pictures = smiles. Raining minutes before the beachside ceremony is supposed to start = wait in the limo and smile. Peek at each other during prayer and smile. You may kiss your bride and smile. I wear my sunglasses at night and smile.
So let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy rainy day. This day only happens once.
P.S. Stay tuned for images from their engagement session in our next post!
