We first met Carita and Tre a year ago when the couple came in for a consultation to discuss their wedding. We strive to become friends with all of our clients in the months leading to their wedding day, but with this couple it seemed we were instant BFFs. I know, I said BFFs. Their standard consultation turned into a four hour bonding session over several bottles of wine, and by the end of the night, we were hugging our goodbyes. In the year since then, we’ve gone to the movies together, met umpteen times for drinks or dinner, and I don’t think any of us will ever forget Carita’s hysterical screams/laughter at Panic Attack, the haunted house here in town.
The day of the wedding, I shed tears with all the rest of the guests during the ceremony, and Jeff made a trip across town to attend the reception even though he was not the assigned photographer for this wedding.
More and more, our couples are choosing to get creative and make their weddings truly their own, rather than follow a cookie-cutter structure for the occasion. Tre and Carita’s wedding day was filled with traditions that were special to them: They concluded their ceremony with the jumping of the broom; They included a special sorority & fraternity rituals during the reception; Guests were given special “mix-tape” CDs that included interviews with the bride and groom; fraternity brother and radio DJ Bigg B was the master of ceremonies. Some of our couples still in their planning stages often ask us if it’s “okay” to do something non-traditional. We say, wholeheartedly, go for it! There are no rules! The best weddings celebrate the relationship between the two of you.
