Luz and Cristina’s love story has been a long time in the making. These two ladies met and fell and love more than 12 years ago, and have been inseparable ever since. Several years ago, they registered as domestic partners. But it wasn’t until the recent overturn of California’s Proposition 8 banning same sex marriages that they could truly solidify their love in the form of legal marriage. But all that’s mere fact… I have to tell you their story.
You see, Luz and I go way back. Like college days back. The two of us and another woman, Kelli, worked together on a study at the university I attended, and later worked for for several years. We’ve bonded over the kind of days you can only have when working with patients with severe psychosis… and often times our patients were more sane than we were! The three of us saw each other through heartbreaks and career changes and graduate school and moving away.
Luz and Cristina agreed to be guinea pigs for one of my first homework assignments when I began to study photography. I still love this image today:
So when Luz and Cristina told Jeff and me they were getting married, we could only say it was about time! And when they asked us to photograph their wedding, we were honored and excited and couldn’t wait. And of course we had to do some engagement portraits as well. Because, you know, I had to do something to update that first picture from all those years ago! Here’s one of my favorites, taken on Coronado Island:
So here it is, the long-awaited wedding of Luz and Cristina. The culmination of a 12 year love story takes place at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, a beautiful resort on rocky cliffs above the Pacific just north of San Diego. I’ll admit it; I cried. Enjoy…
This box held their rings. And unbeknownst to them, a friend made the box with one of the images I took all those years ago! Full circle…
And of course, Kelli and Erin came as well!
