At indigosilver, we’ve been getting more and more requests for male boudoir lately. And I think this is an awesome thing! Women have long been vocal about both body positivity and growing up with a negative self-image. Boudoir photography has exploded in the last 7-8 years because women are seeking to reclaim self-love through a photography experience that shows them they are beautiful and desirable. The thing is, women aren’t the only ones looking for an experience that makes them feel seen, feel powerful, and feel sexy. More and more, men are stepping forward and saying that they, too, are looking to replace self-doubt with self-love.
The interwebs have long shown male boudoir, or “dudeoir”, as a parody: men posing in traditionally feminine poses, a caricature of a burly man with a dad bod lounging in a bubble bath. While the role reversal may be good for a few laughs, I think ANY human — male, female, or non-binary — looking for a self love experience deserves to be shown in their best light, and not as a joke. To me, boudoir has never been about sex per se, but what makes each person look and feel sexy. It’s an exploration of who someone is and how someone wants to be seen. During a boudoir shoot, we try several roles and several emotions: powerful, demure, coy, playful, sultry, wistful. Every human is multidimensional, so we explores all these “sides”. Whether that person is female or otherwise, makes no difference to me!
Men: we see you, and I believe you deserve this empowering experience as well. Non-binary friends: Whether you want to explore gender roles, or leave gender entirely out of the equation, you still deserve portraits that make you feel amazing.
So, enter Mr. M. He is someone that Jeff and I have photographed and worked with in the past, and agreed to get vulnerable with me in an exploration of male boudoir. I think these photos show a wide range of Mr. M’s personality — sexy, yes, but also raw, playful, vulnerable, and more. I’m super excited to begin offering male boudoir. Coming soon: website updates that will be more gender-inclusive (bare with me until then).
Tell me what you think in the comments.
